i realise that this is not low budget but after watching BBC2 wild programme on the Thames i wondered what cameras are used and why they make the natural world better looking than a newsbroadcast camera and how much they cost

They are using actually film cameras. Broadcast cameras like Betacam, DVCpro, etc, etc all convert each image into three colour groups, red/green/blue... then each is converted into an analog (or digital) signal and sent to the VTR (video tape recorder), which then converts the colours back into an image.. this process causes the image to lose quality, but is used because it is so cheap (ie consumer cameras are 500 dollars instead of 15000 dollars for film cams.)

Film on the other hand captures the exact light that hits the lens and it is embedded right onto the piece of plastic... this means that you get on film exactly what you saw through the lens... every little detail, if exposed properly.

i saw a camera on the programme about fake marriages oon bbc1 (kenyon under cover) and it looked like a step up from my sony handycam. it still had the 'infolithium' battery at the back and similar design but had an external mike and a more elongated body. the pictures it gave were almost broadcast quality. what are these and how much?
